JSW Steel Coated Products Ltd. manages the downstream operaons of JSW Steel Ltd at Vasind in Shahapur Taluka. JSW has been extending support to posively impact the lives of the nearby community. JSW is implementaon educaonal programs in collaboraon with educaon department in Zilla parishad and Government schools.
JSW Steel Coated Products Ltd in associaon with STEM learning has implemented Mini Science Centre in 96 Schools in Shahapur, Kalyan and Bhiwandi taluka. The program was introduced in 2015-16 and is ongoing project in these schools. JSW together with STEM Learning have been involved from planning to execuon phase.
To increase student’s interest in Science and mathemacs various acvies are conducted like since its incepon like quiz and model making compeon every year since iniaon of the project wherein the students have an opportunity to showcase their ideas and innovaons. The winners are awarded cer?cate on Naonal Science day. The observaons indicate that these acvies have smulated excitement among the students while learning science.
To bring about paradigm shi in the way students learn and teachers teaching approaches to move system from one of “rote learning” to “learning with understanding”. Teachers are exposed to various acvies such as scienst lectures organized to expand their approaches towards science subject and to have depth of knowledge. Teachers are given opportunity to parcipate in Marathi Vidnyan Parishad Seminar and imbibe innovave ideas methods of evaluaon of science learning in classrooms. As part of project teachers are give training explaining scien?c principals behind each exhibit.
These joined e?orts of JSW and STEM learning since is witnessing a gradual change wherein schools are taking iniaves to sustain the project, example teachers take iniave to train teachers transferred or appointed, maintenance cost etc.
Mini Science center is a novel seng in the school situated in the remotes area of Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Students have to walk di?cult terrain for more than 3 kms to reach school. More than 172 students have access to Mini Science Centre.
While mapping the experience of students about Mini Science Center they were arculate in sharing how their scary percepon towards Science and mathemacs subjects is changing to increase in interest levels . “Maximum students jo tough maante hai in equipments ki baaje se ka? easy lagne laga.“ Earlier, understanding concepts and formulae were di?cult. More oen students ended up mugging formula and concepts at the me of examinaon. Verbam response “Maximum students jo tough maante hai in equipments ki baaje se ka? easy lagne laga.” (Most number of students who found the concept di?cult, are now ?nding it much easier to understand). They learned science through theorecal knowledge but now their experience in using di?erent models connected with their syllabus .Hence, they have a beer context of the subjects and they can touch and feel model they are becoming much more con?dent. They not only understand the experiments learn through books but do their own experiments.
The Kasturbha Gandhi School situated in in Ambikapur district of Chasgarhis a residenal school for girls mostly belonging to the tribal community. A career in Science is a challenge in rural schools, and both science teachers and students face roadblocks. Science educaonal opportunies from outside are rarely available. Despite this limited exposure, these school girls have good imaginaon. Upon seeing the science models at the Mini Science Centre and its praccal applicaon to science subjects, students have been movated to design similar models at low cost. This is indeed an achievement. They are more inclined to learn science subjects. Seeing the di?erence among the girls of Kasturbha Gandhi School and their increased interest levels in subjects, nearby schools are also availing themselves of the Mini Science Centre facility for their students.
The Babasaheb Najare School is located in the small town of Awas village, 16kms from Alibaug, a coastal municipal town in Raigad district of Maharashtra. Children from the nearby village aend this school. Generally, rural schools lack modern infrastructure facilies which hinder the learning progress of students. Since the past two years, the Babasaheb Najare School has been regularly using STEM’s Mini Science Centre (MSC).
Under the MSC, teachers carry science models to the classroom which engender curiosity among students as to what these models are and how they funcon and what they are going to get by learning through these models. As students actually see the working models in the classroom, they tend to become more involved and their inquisiveness increases, leading to interacve queson and answer sessions. This awakens curious minds to learn more about the subjects and a learning environment is created which is enabling and serves to deepen the abilies of young learners. This self-explanatory method has been a great help to students. The availability of MSC is enabling students from rural schools to enter into the mainstream of Science and Technology. The Science lecture is oen boring for students who have di?cules comprehending science theories and vocabulary. Interacve teaching tools have expanded the horizons of teachers, as praccal models are simple and provide students clarity of basic concepts in Science and Mathemacs. The e?ecveness of teaching through these models can be sensed when students take iniave in teaching science through these models to their peers, as was expressed by the teachers of Jesus and Mary Convent School, Noida.
Earlier, students had to learn concepts by rote without understanding, but now aer seeing praccal applicaons of relevant models, their creavity has been enhanced and their thinking process is developing.
H. S. Tara School is located in the rural area of Chasgarh. The students’ belong to the low socio-economic background. The School has minimal basic facilies. The electricity is available for 10 hrs a day in the village. Despite of this electricity problem teachers make a point to take students at least once or twice a week to the Mini Science centre so that they learn the subject playful manner and develop interest. In teachers observaon this strategy to expose students to MSC once or twice a week is helping students’ in terms of enhancing knowledge and hands on experience working models giving them conceptual clarity. This has led to improved student-teacher interacons. They read scien?c literature and come out with newer ideas and take e?orts to complete given assignments in Science and Mathemacs on me.
Before the installation of STEM Mini Science Centre (MSC), at B Shishu Vikas
Trust Primary and Secondary School, Jagruti, a brilliant and clever
student of 9th grade, failed to achieve 1st position at Ward Level Science
Fair. But this time, after being able to comprehend the scientific concepts through
working models of MSC, she secured 1st position at Ward Level Science Fair and
essay writing competition. She is all smiles and gives the credit to MSC for her
MSC aims to provide a practical approach to science, making it an easy and
interesting subject. Primary science teachers like Mrs. Mukta Jadav and Mrs.
Bhavna Pandit of the school try their best to teach students through textbooks
and figures but at times, they miss out on getting the concepts clearer into the
minds of the students. But after implementation of MSC at their school as part of
the CSR activity, they are now able to explain concepts more practically and in
lesser time. Students find it more interesting and are fascinated towards the
subject due to its visual and physical appeal, and hence are willing to participate.
Like Jagruti, there are many more intelligent students coming from slum families
and studying at Shishu Vikas Trust Primary and Secondary School, Kandivali
Mumbai in Maharashtra, who cannot afford the cost of making projects due to
their financial situations. They dream big and work hard, albeit their social status.
MSC aims to help these students make the most out of their knowledge and
STEM Learning, as a part of the program organised a lecture for Steachers and principals in collaboration with JSW, in the
district of Mumbai. The purpose of the lecture was to provide
knowledge and opportunity to understand science concepts more
profoundly, by the well-known scientists. Participants included 54
teachers and 35 principals from around 51 schools and also
dignitaries from JSW, as part of their CSR initiative.
The lecture was given by Padma Shri Dr. Sharad Kale, a senior
scientist and head of technology transfer and collaboration at
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). He was honoured for his
creation of NISARGRUNA biogas technology for solid
biodegradable waste resource management. The other guest

The program not only satisfied the curiosity of knowledge of science
through insightful lectures by the scientists but also introduced
interesting learning techniques and easy and innovative teaching
On 22nd September’ 2017, I began my journey for Teacher Training Program for Baal Nanadanvan School at Jamshet taluka in Dahanu. Reaching this school was a tough job for me. Tribes staying nearby were of great help to reach this remote school in the midst of forest.
I met the Prinicipal and respective teachers, they had some idea about the models. They had displayed the index of the models in charts on the entry of the science lab, making it easy to access the models. Mapping of models was done as per class and section. Their efforts made me happy.
I was about to begin with the training and suddenly there was power cut. Now what to do? But, no worries, teachers were there with a substitute plan. I began training. They had some idea, so they were involved in knowing models and techniques in detail. They were playing with Puzzles and Tangram. Their interactive and fun-filled approach helped me complete the training.
While, I was moving around the school, I saw students were climbing ropes tied to a huge tree. They were learning beneath the tree. Everything here in this school was very close to nature.
I am happy that I was a part of this TTP organized with the combined efforts of STEM Learning & Sewa Sahyog Foundation and Mini Science Centre was developed at Baal Nandanvan Nisarg School, Piwdiwada, Dahanu taluka, Palghar District.
My journey to Mangalore as a trainer to Mini Science Centre at Vidya Prasara Vidyamandira, Hejamadi, Mangalore was on 15th October’ 2018. It was basically for inauguration Mini Science Centre and Teachers Training Programme at this school.
Let’s know more about Vidya Prasara Vidyamandira School.
- The school was established in 1950 in the name of Hejamadi Kodi Vidya Prasara. It is an association primarily consisting of ex-students of the schools in the village.
- The school works with the aim to achieve zero school drop-out rate in the village as well as increase the literacy level. And also to advance the standard of education than currently available in nearby cities like a computer – E education.
The inauguration started at 1:30 PM in presence of all the members of the association, teachers, students, and the parents. Members of the school association were very inspiring with their words and actions.
Everyone present there seemed excited to know more about the MSC exhibits. The main attention grabbers were the Magic Water Tap, Maxwell’s Wheel, Newton’s Cradle, and the Infinity Tunnel.
Moving ahead I took the Teachers Training Programme of the Science teachers, I explained working principles of these exhibits by giving real life examples for all the 65 exhibits.
The co-founder of the school, Mr. Ravindra Puthran happy and impressed with my zeal towards the work. He wanted to know more about other scientific and technological things that can be done for the betterment of the students.
On a very serious note, I am very happy and grateful to STEM Learning for providing me this opportunity to play a role in the betterment of society through education.
STEM does not only stand for Science Technology Engineering Mathematics but also according to me it is paving the path for “Students to Think and Explore through their Minds”.
