Seeking to Encourage Children’s Scientific Curiosity Through CSR

The evolution of CSR in India in the last two-three years has led to an increase in the number of effectively managed social sector interventions & It is imperative for the businesses to gather adequate information and credible data for measuring performance, to know the success and accordingly proceed/align/re-align the strategies and achieving the desired results and outcome as planned.

Through Monitoring & Evaluation, STEM Learning helps donors, policy makers, implementers and other stakeholders to analyze the effect of their initiatives that they have conducted.

The focus of STEM Learning is not just to install Mini Science Centre (MSC), rather seek to increase STEM literacy and prepare young children for the demands of a 21-century society that will require them to learn sequencing, think computationally, problem-solve, and collaborate.

Simultaneously, We keep a continuous check on the school and students so that a record can be maintained of what changes have came in their learning process.

When asked that what changes are observed after the installation of Mini Science Centre, Ravi Kadam, STEM (Monitoring & Evaluation team), quoted, “As STEM science models are approved by SCERT boards of four states viz. Maharashtra, Goa, Chhattisgarh and Jammu & Kashmir. The teachers found the models useful and it helps them to explain the complex scientific & mathematical concepts with ease. Speaking about children, they tend to easily remember the concepts when they observe & handle the working models themselves. Instead of mugging up, they write what they experience.”

It can be concluded through the observations that after the installation of MSC, the school’s participation in science related competitions are increased. The students who have access to MSC are not afraid of science anymore. Mr Ravi further mentioned that students from Nakhava High School, Thane conducted small sessions on the roads in nearby area to explain working of Mini Science Centre models to common people.

The journey is full of obstacles and inconveniences. Many times M&E team members travel to the remotest areas. Like M&E team members visited schools in Shahapur taluka, a remote area; don’t have basic infrastructure too. Some classes were taken under the metal sheets. But when they got Mini Science Centre in their school the needy students got benefited through it. The moment we witness students getting benefited because of our efforts, that give us real joy. It makes all the difficulties turn into great memories.

AGAR DUNIYA ME KAHI JANNAT HAI TOH
YAHI HAI, YAHI HAI, YAHI HAI.

Jammu & Kashmir, a state which is believed to be the heaven on earth has always been surrounded by politics, war, violence and appreciated for its beauty but was always neglected when it comes to duty.

In the Samba District, Jammu, STEM Learning played a very vital role in upgrading the education system for underprivileged students through CSR. We installed Mini Science Centre on 15th September, 2015 in Govt. H.S. School, Uttar Bihani. The CSR initiative was taken in collaboration with Lupin Foundation. Since then about 55+ students have been benefited. Mini Science Centre clarifies the concepts of science and tech more efficiently and help the teachers in making learning a fun process.

MRS. Romika Rajput, Mini Science Centre  in-charge Govt. H.S School said “Students get to learn so much in Mini Science Centre and enjoy it as well. Because it’s practical, students get to observe real objects and materials. They also get to learn laboratory skills. Their scientific attitude is being developed and learning by doing activity is generating interest”.

Aman Kumar, Student Govt. H.S School said, “There is a Mini Science Centre installed in our school unlike others, hence our school is different. The difference between me and my friends from other school is, they study in a school which doesn’t have Mini Science Centre, so they come to me for understanding the difficult concepts.” Aman always wanted to make a drone, he researched and found that drone has some limit up to which it can fly. Later when he observed floating fan in Mini Science Centre, he innovated that by adding more fans, the flying limit of drone could be increased.

Mini Science Centres are making students curious. Students are learning by observing STEM Mini Science models. Around 200 students now have access to Mini Science Centre in J&K district. It proved to be a huge help for the student.

Corporate Social responsibility is a company’s sense of responsibility towards the community and environment in which it operates. The term generally applies to think out of the box and choosing the most appropriate way for social welfare. And “an investment in education pays the best interest.”

HINDALCO believes in “Winning smile… touching hearts.” Long before CSR found a place in the corporate lexicon, it was already textured in the group’s value system. For over 50 years, HINDALCO has worked in the hinterlands of India to better the quality of life of the underprivileged sections of society.

This time HINDALCO collaborated with STEM Learning and introduced Mini Science Centre at Shishu Mandir School, Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh. The Mini Science Centre will help to develop hands-on learning among 250+ underprivileged children. The vision was to provide underprivileged students with the opportunities as other normally get. They wanted to enlighten students from remotest areas with the fundamental concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The event became gracious with the presence of Mr Rituraj – IAS officer, SDM Devsar. HINDALCO HR Head – Mr Vishvanath Mukherjee, CSR Head – Mr Yashwanth Kumar, Rusen Kumar – Editor of India CSR Network, Marketing Manager of STEM Learning Mr Sadanand Shetty, also made the occasion overwhelming.

Upgrading Education in Himachal Pradesh through CSR

Upgrading Education in Himachal Pradesh through CSR

Upgrading Education in Himachal Pradesh through CSR
Priyanka Negi, Student from Government High School Nichar, Himachal Pradesh Handling STEM Model

Himachal Pradesh, the state well known for its beauty is covered by lower Himalayas’ all over. The high mountains seem to protect the state from the four corners. Moreover, they stand so bold and firm motivating people. Likewise, the students of Govt S.S. School of Urni & Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, will become an ideal for other underprivileged students. Because STEM learning & JSW foundation provided them with Mini Science Centres (MSC), which succeeded in upgrading the learning system.

STEM Learning reached out to the remotest areas of Himachal Pradesh (Urni & Kinnaur) where students walked for 2-3 kilometres to reach schools. We installed Mini Science centres in these schools through CSR with the aim of reaching out to the students. In MSC students have access to hands-on tabletop plug & play models and colourful backdrops which make learning easy and interesting.

Mr Suhas Diwan, Principal of Govt. S.S. School, Urni said “the Mini Science Centre that has been established by STEM Learning has all the working models so it has become easier for the Science teachers to explain the basic concepts to students” he further added “I heartily thank STEM Learning & JSW Foundation for providing such a wonderful facility to both the teachers and the students because of which the learning level of students has upgraded.

STEM Mini Science Centre

Priyanka Negi, a student of Govt. S. S. thanked MSC and said “it has given us such great optics to understand Science in a better way. She even told that beforehand the students just had to imagine the DNA and its working, but now they can study it through 3-dimensional models which make it easier to understand.

The journey from where we started and where we are is full of obstacles and difficulties. We can’t just provide the schools with MSC; we even have to train each teacher so that they can effectively teach the students. Also, people do not tend to have so adaptive nature, so it takes time for them to understand our vision and then to adapt it. A little progress each day adds up to the success.

This is not just our success. This couldn’t be possible without the support of our mission partners like JSW, who contributed their CSR funds towards the mission to promote science education among the rural & remotest areas of the country. An appreciation by media or government obviously makes us feel better but when we witness students reaching heights, the pride we feel is unmatched. When a student who is scared of science, when taught theoretically but creates their own innovations when provided with practical models and facilities, that is what our real success is.
